VLC Direct and VLC Media Player Connection

Before you start, you must have installed VLC Player in you PC or Mac. You can find it here: VLC 2.0.2

If you have installed VLC 2.0.1 or VLC 2.0.4, please uninstall it and install VLC 2.0.2 because 2.0.1 and 2.0.4 versions crash when streaming to Android.
Other versions that work fine: 1.1.11, 2.0.0 and 2.0.3


Once you have installed VLC in your PC or Mac, you must configure VLC to allow remote connections.

If you have Windows (XP / VISTA / 7) in your PC, there's a script available that makes all the configurations automatically. It's really easy! Just download it and run it as administrator (right click on it and "run as administrator")

If you don't have windows or the script didn't work for your, just follow this 10 step guide:

1. This step is only needed if you installed VLC Media Player 2.0.0 or higher. If you are using VLC Media Player 1.1.11 or prior, just jump to step 2

   1.1  If  you have Windows: edit as administrator with wordpad the file c:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\lua\http\.hosts
             If you have Mac: edit this file /Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/share/lua/http/.hosts    (please note this is a hidden file, so you will need administrator permissions to see and edit this file)
    1.2  remove the "#" from these lines, save the file and restart VLC.
           Here are the lines of .hosts you must change:
                    # private addresses
                    #fc00::/7
                    #fec0::/10
                    #10.0.0.0/8
                    #172.16.0.0/12
                    #192.168.0.0/16
                    #169.254.0.0/16
          change to:

                    # private addresses
                    fc00::/7
                    fec0::/10
                   10.0.0.0/8
                   172.16.0.0/12
                   192.168.0.0/16
                   169.254.0.0/16
    1.3  Save the file.

2. Start VLC

3. This step is only needed if you installed VLC Media Player 2.0.0 or higher. If you are using VLC Media Player 1.1.11 or prior, just jump to step 4.

      3.1  Find the shortcut to VLC and edit its properties. We need to add the following parameters to the command line that starts VLC:

vlc.exe --sout-ffmpeg-strict=-2 --rtsp-session-timeout=99999

4. Enable the VLC web interface

VLC 1.1.11 or prior:

VLC 2.0.0 or higher:  

5. Open VLC Direct in your device

6. Open menu

7. Go to "Settings"

8. Click "Automatic Connection Wizard"

9. Click "Start". VLC Direct will start scanning the network, looking for VLC.

10. That's it! VLC Direct is now configured and ready to use!
